Update 5/22/08:
Based on a conversation with the Eveo team, we are going to move forward with this idea while keeping some things in mind.
1. We will perform a simple test to preview different approaches to the mouth - I will be performing this test at Hotbed. Click here to see the tests.
2. We need to place motion tracking squares (green) in frame to track movement with.
3. Originally we hoped to light the inside of the mouth. The only way to do this would be to place an LED light in the actor's mouth. I am concerned about chocking. Since the mouth will be replaced by CG, I'd like to avoid lighting the mouth.
4. We want to motivate the camera move into the mouth by having the talent gasp for air. We need to consider how this will affect any speed ramping.

To achieve this shot we will need a small jib to move the camera fluidly from the wide shot to the close up. The camera will fall towards the open mouth accelerating as it falls simulating ground rush. In order to maintain focus we will need to employ a diopter and rack focus through the move. The transition will happen seamlessly by giving Joe a CG throat through the entire shot. The CG throat will be composited behind Joe's real teeth. As the real camera moves towards the mouth the CG camera for the composite will need to moved to match. A slight zoom may need to be applied to the tail end of the live action shoot to get past the teeth and into the mouth. We need to keep in mind the acceleration and deceleration of the camera. When the move starts it will accelerate towards the mouth, but as the camera approaches the mouth the operator will want to slow the camera down to avoid hitting the talent with the lens. This speed change might need to be compensated for in post. We can also build a rig that will catch the camera so that the operator doesn't have to decelerate the move as much. We should also consider reversing the camera move and starting close on the mouth and moving to the wide shot. The shot will need to be reversed in post. This will give us more control over the final frame where the CG transition happens.
The talent will be lying still as if a sleep in a bed so there shouldn't be wobble issues if the footage need to speed up to compensate for the real camera's deceleration.
